Fortunately, the charming and witty concierge, Leo, arrives with pizza, Monopoly, and a much-needed diversion.
While Holden doesnât know much about Leo Min, he quickly realizes their chemistry is undeniableâperhaps even enough to convince the show’s casting directors that they are a genuine couple. They just need to crush the competition and keep their stories straight to win, potentially solving all of Holdenâs problems.
I never imagined I would be so invested in a game show that feels like a blend of The Price is Right and Jeopardy, but Holden James has a way of making it captivating! At first, Holdenâs obsession with the game show seemed puzzling, but Janovsky beautifully weaves a rich backstory and emotional connection between Holden and Madcap Market, making you wish it were a real show to watch or participate in. You can relate to Holden’s ex-boyfriend and only glimpse Holden’s attachment to the game initially, but as the narrative unfolds, deeper layers are revealed, leaving you wanting to give him a comforting hug.
The dynamic between Holden and Leo is charged from the outset, even when Holden harbors some animosity toward Leo. The story is told solely from Holdenâs perspective, and while he appears to dislike Leo at first, the chemistry between them is evident from the beginning. Some might argue that Leoâs appeal is mainly through Holdenâs viewpoint, but Janovsky skillfully introduces traits of Leo that even Holden struggles to comprehend initially, allowing the reader to genuinely appreciate him as a character in his own right. Plus, we can’t help but appreciate a man who recognizes that drunken consent isnât true consent!
What I expected to be a light and entertaining read turned out to be much deeper. The weight of Holden’s mother’s death looms over him, and his journey through grief is a significant aspect of the story. Following Holden’s grieving process illustrates the non-linear nature of healing and loss, resonating with me and helping me feel more at ease with my own emotional fluctuations regarding grief. Janovsky masterfully balances humor with heavier themes, packing a lot of depth into a concise narrative.

This was such an adorable read! The chemistry between Holden and Leo was instant, and while I typically don’t enjoy stories with too much “insta-love,” it didn’t come off as cringeworthy here. They complemented each other perfectly, both as friends and romantic partners. I also appreciated the unique premise; although I never watched Supermarket Sweep, I could see how it inspired this story. The author skillfully addressed the theme of grief, making it very relatable. Grief isn’t something you truly get over, but rather something that becomes less intense over time. I really enjoyed following Holden’s journey of healing. Overall, this is a charming and fun read filled with genuine emotions. Definitely worth picking up!

This is where the “fake” dating concept comes into play; they clearly haven’t had enough time to genuinely fall in love, so it revolves around physical attraction instead.
Holden, who is still reeling from the loss of his boyfriend just 48 hours prior, is seeking a partner for a game show that requires him to be in a couple. Enter Leoâwhy not team up, especially since they could use the prize money? They strike a deal to be fake lovers with benefits.
Holden struggles with the belief that he could ever be loved. He assumes Leo’s feelings are just for show, engaging in their physical relationship purely for enjoyment.
If you’re looking for a playful fake dating story filled with steamy moments, this book is for you. However, if you prefer a romance with a bit more restraint, you might want to look elsewhere.
