A Charming Escape Awaits! đâ¨
Imagine stepping into the shoes of Abby Jones, a self-conscious writer who gets thrust into the spotlight of a reality dating show, The Stag. Abby’s alter ego, Anastasia, has a knack for writing the most entertaining and merciless gossip that will leave you in stitches. Maddison –
The Dating Game is a fun and fast-paced read, perfect for fans of The Bachelor! Abby, who has been secretly critiquing The Stag under the alias “Anastasia,” gets an unexpected call from a producer that changes everything. Sheâs not just going to write about the new season in Sydney; sheâll also play the role of a fake love interest. This unique opportunity gives her a chance to uncover the behind-the-scenes drama while enhancing her writing. But as Abby navigates this intricate game of love, will she find herself falling for the Stag, or will someone else capture her heart?

A wonderfully crafted and enchanting romance that explores self-discovery on the journey to love.
Under the guise of her alter ego, Anastasia, Abby Jones writes a gossip piece for The Stag, a leading reality dating show. Initially, Anastasia is just a way for Abby to earn some cash while she pursues her passion for serious investigative journalism. However, Abby’s life takes an unexpected turn when her editor insists she go undercover as a contestant on The Stag. From a near mishap in an elevator, saved by the charming crew member Jack, to being thrown into an Australian mansion filled with eleven ambitious women and one dashing bachelor, Abby’s world is upended.
Can she handle bullies, forge friendships, manage a second persona for the show, write as Anastasia amid the chaos, and cope with her growing feelings for a man who’s not part of the dating game? It’s a challenge to be one woman, let alone three.
The Dating Game is a delightful, cheeky adventure that shines a light on reality dating television and the bonds of friendship. Abby’s witty, PG Belle de Jour-style narration provides endless entertainment. The sweet, slow-burn romance adds an extra layer of heart-fluttering excitement. Barker has created a hilariously thoughtful and heartfelt romcom that leaves this hot-blooded American craving more.

I absolutely adored this delightful summer read! The Dating Game is a beautifully crafted slow-burn romance infused with sharp humor on every page. Abby finds herself reluctantly participating in a dating show in Sydney, where she channels her witty alter-ego, Anastasia, to craft snarky episode reviews. As her connection with the charming producer, Jack, deepens, I couldnât help but cheer for their romance.
However, this book goes beyond a typical love story; it also celebrates the power of female friendship, even amidst competition. Sandy Baker’s writing is filled with such cleverness and warmth that I was completely drawn into the narrative, often laughing out loud as Abby and the other contestants navigated one disastrous Stag date after another. Itâs a fantastic, feel-good romcom escape that I highly recommend!

As someone who has never seen The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, I was initially indifferent about this book. However, as I continued reading, I discovered that it was quite entertaining. While itâs not my absolute favorite, itâs still a worthwhile read.
Sue Mauro –
The Dating Game offers an entertaining story set in Australia. I appreciated how the majority of the women quickly realized that the real prize isn’t the guy, but rather the connections and friendships formed during the journey.
Bubblestarlet –
The concept of the book intrigued me, and even though I haven’t seen the show itâs based on (The Bachelor), I’m familiar enough with reality TV to grasp the idea. Abby, the main character, is fantasticâsomeone you’d definitely want on your side. She’s witty, loyal, and intelligent. Writing under the alias Anastasia Blabbergasted, her columns are both hilarious and sharp. The book does an excellent job of revealing the behind-the-scenes dynamics of a reality show. I appreciated how it delved into various relationships, both familial and romantic, along with friendships. All the characters, including the ‘villains,’ were well-developed, making the story feel authentic. While I didn’t enjoy this as much as some of Sandy’s other works, I still found it enjoyable and think it’s definitely worth reading.
Nikki D –
Even though the story was told in the first person present tense, which isn’t my preferred style for romance novels, I found this tale to be quite enjoyable. It provided an interesting perspective on the surreal nature of reality TV. The plot was fun, featuring unexpected twists and an adorable romantic storyline.
Gail Bailey –
What an exciting and captivating story set in the world of reality television! The authorâs characterizations of both people and places are incredibly accurate. Iâm eagerly anticipating her next release! âď¸âď¸âď¸

What I Loved
The standout feature of this story for me was its clever humor and unapologetic, sometimes ruthless satire. I anticipated a tongue-in-cheek take on the world of dating shows, and this book delivered that and so much more. Anastasia Blabbergasted’s witty commentary had me chuckling throughout the entire readâher name alone sets the tone perfectly!
The entertainment value is exceptionally high, making it an ideal choice for enjoying by the pool, at the beach, or snuggled up at home with a glass of wine in hand. Itâs light and amusing, allowing the pages to fly by effortlessly.
I was pleasantly surprised by the romance, which felt refreshingly real without any overly sentimental momentsâmy glasses stayed clear! Itâs a slow-burn romance that I felt lucky to witness, possessing a sincerity that resonated with me and made me fall in love with it.
Characters
Most of the characters are quite likable. Naturally, not every character can be perfect, as that wouldnât make for an interesting story. However, the main characters and their supporting counterparts are delightful and remind me of people we all know. While they arenât deeply developed, I was okay with that. A deeper exploration could have added more layers, but Iâm not sure it would have enhanced the humor or overall enjoyment of the story.
Reminds Me Of
The level of satire really brought to mind Gilmore Girls. I could see Rory Gilmore embodying Anastasia Blabbergasted, as her reviews for the Yale Daily News showcased a similar wit.
What I Wish
I have a couple of items on my wish list. Firstly, I would have liked a more in-depth understanding of the main and supporting characters; Iâm curious about where that might have taken the story. Secondly, I felt the narrative could have benefited from some trimming. At times, it felt overly detailed and wordy, disrupting my reading flow.
To Read or Not to Read
If youâre in the mood for a lighthearted read that will keep you laughing and appreciate sharp satire, then The Dating Game is a book youâll enjoy from beginning to end.
